ICT is a growth sectors for the UK and a major driver for the economy in Suffolk with expanding clusters of high tech companies set to bring thousands of new jobs.
The universal use of ICT as a business tool and strong links to other sectors means it can drive innovation and the adoption of new technologies. The sector includes hardware, software, consultancy, data and telecommunications linked to services and applications such as video-conferencing and distance learning.
One of the leading centres of communications innovation worldwide, Adastral Park at Martlesham is BT’s global innovation and development centre and is also home to a growing network of over 40 related companies doing pioneering work in advanced technologies.
Over half the jobs in Suffolk’s ICT sector are in telecommunications in over 100 workplaces based around Adastral Park, Martlesham, where BT is a major employer of 3,500 people. It is estimated that each of these jobs creates almost two more elsewhere in supply or services.
Many of the smaller ICT companies across the county employ staff, with over 800 businesses involved in software consultancy and supply.
University Campus Suffolk (UCS) and the county’s schools and colleges have a vital role in ensuring students gain the latest ICT skills to meet the needs of the industry.
